How to Increase Radio Listenership in Kenya: A Strategy Guide for Stations

By , Founder & CEO, Be Strategic Global 6 min read

In short: Radio remains one of Kenya’s most-used media. Stations that grow listenership have a sharp position in a crowded dial, formats built around their audience’s day, presenters with real connection, and a digital strategy that extends the station beyond the FM signal.

Radio is far from dead in Kenya. It remains one of the most widely consumed media in the country, in cars, matatus, homes, shops and increasingly on phones. But the dial is crowded, and audiences have more choice than ever. If your ratings are dropping, the cause is usually strategic, not technical.

Why radio station ratings drop

  • No clear position: the station sounds like three others on the dial.
  • Formats that ignore the audience’s day: the right content at the wrong time.
  • Presenter churn or weak chemistry: listeners follow people, not frequencies.
  • No digital extension: younger audiences discover content online first.
  • Inconsistent brand: on-air sound, social media and events tell different stories.

1. Position the station in a crowded market

Media brand positioning starts with one question: who exactly is this station for, and why would they choose it over every alternative? Define your core listener precisely by age, location, language, lifestyle and the moments they tune in, then make every programming and marketing decision serve that person.

2. Build formats around your listener’s day

A winning radio show format matches the listener’s mood and routine: energy and traffic in the morning drive, companionship mid-morning, conversation and call-ins in the afternoon, and music and personality in the evening. Map your audience’s day, then audit each daypart against it. Test new show concepts as pilots before committing the schedule.

3. Invest in presenters as brands

Presenters are a station’s most powerful asset. Recruit and groom talent for chemistry and authenticity, give them clear on-air identities, and build their personal brands across social platforms, because listeners who follow a presenter follow the station.

4. Digital transformation beyond the FM signal

Radio station digital transformation means meeting audiences wherever they are:

  • Live streaming and on-demand clips of the best moments
  • Short-form video from the studio on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube
  • WhatsApp communities and interactive call-in and voice-note segments
  • Podcasts that extend popular shows and presenters

Digital is not a separate department; it is part of the show.

5. Turn listeners into revenue

Growth only matters if it converts. Package audiences for advertisers by daypart and demographic, build branded content and sponsored segments, and use station events, concerts and activations to create experiences brands want to be part of.

The same principles apply to TV

TV stations growing viewership face the same challenges: a clear position, formats that fit the audience, on-screen talent that connects and a strong digital extension. TV show concept development and rebranding follow the same strategic process.
